In Case You Missed It: Starting January 1st, every residence in Washington State must have a carbon monoxide detector installed. The law, which you can read here, has been slowly put into effect since 2010 with requirements for new construction. Now, all residences including apartments, dorms, institutions and hotels will be required to have them as well. Own your home? You are in the clear until you put your house up for sale or get a remodeling permit... but it's not a bad investment to make before then.
From the Department of Health, sources of carbon monoxide include: combustion from cars and trucks, small gasoline power equipment like weed trimmers and chain saws, boat engines, gas and camp stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal and wood, and gas ranges, ovens, or furnaces. Tobacco smoke is a significant source of carbon monoxide in homes with smokers. Read more about the dangers of carbon monoxide here.
Do you already have a monitor installed in your home?
